In the garden with the Canon EOS 90D and Sigma 105mm macro.
One of the great things about macro photography is that you don’t really have to go far to practice. My previous blog post featured macro photography from the back garden and this post continues with that theme.
As well as the macro pictures (in Picture set two) there are a few pictures in Picture set one (below) of some Goldfinches that are currently daily visitors to our garden.
We have at least a couple of pairs that are regular and frequent visitors and they are always quite enjoyable and fascinating to watch.
A downside…
One of the downsides of the visiting small birds – sparrows, goldfinches, and blue tits, is that the dropping of seeds and husks from their feeding does attract one or two pigeons.
Whilst we are not especially against pigeons, they are not the sort of birds we want to attract into the garden – due in part to the mess they leave and the potential damage they can cause.
It’s not a big issue, we currently only have one or two but I’ll be taking some action in the next day or two to make the area where the husks drop a little less attractive to the pigeons.
Picture set one
Just a few pictures in this set, mainly of a pair of visiting Goldfinches but also some of a visiting pigeon scavenging for dropped seed husks.

Picture set two
A series of macro pictures with the EOS 90D and Sigma 105mm macro lens are in this picture set.
Strangely and very frustratingly I somehow messed up the settings on my Neewer Ring Lite. For the life of me couldn’t remember what the settings I had been using were.
And in a classic case of operator error (mine) it took me what seemed like an age (at least a couple of days) to get anywhere near to the right settings.
Although I’m back towards getting them right, I’m not really so happy with the sharpness or the general lighting in the pictures I have been taking.
Added to that I have misplaced the ring lite manual and can’t even find an online version to download.
This morning I have written to Neewer for a link so I can download the instruction manual. In the meantime it’s a case of back to the drawing board for my macro photography!
