Macclesfield Canal walk

New places to walk.

We recently walked along a stretch of the Macclesfield canal in Stockport. The stretch that we walked on is only about 25 minutes away by car from where we live, but despite its proximity its a stretch of canal that is unfamiliar to us.

Our walk along the Macclesfield canal started and finished at High Lane.   High Lane is a small village about five miles from the centre of Stockport.

We had a decent walk of around five or six miles or so, and it really is a pleasant stretch of water to wander along.

In parts the canal is a good bit wider than you might expect and is all the prettier for it. On the day we visited there was plenty of activity on the water with boats passing or maneuvering into the local marina.

The total length of the Macclesfield canal is around 26 miles, which means there is clearly plenty of scope for us to make a few more visits to explore the banks and waterside views.

Coffee stop.

One place that is certainly worth a mention is Baileys Trading Post located on the canal near Higher Poynton.  Apart from what seems like a decent list of chandlery and boat supplies the Trading Post also provide a very decent coffee at a very decent price – that combined with benches to sit on make for an ideal waterside refreshment stop.
