Vintage emporiums: bric a brac, cake … and an old oil can

From time to time we like to have a wander and a browse round a one or two of the vintage emporiums. I think the last time we were doing that was back in the summer when we had a wander around the Reclaimed World site in Cotebrook Cheshire, not quite a vintage emporium but similar in some respects.

In the last week or so we called into a couple of the Vintage & Collectors Emporium and Farrow House Antique & Collectables, both of which are located at the Blakemere Village site in Cheshire – it’s a location that has been around as a ;visitor attraction for about 30 years and was originally a pig farm!

We probably call in there maybe a couple of times a year. Although there are a range of traders and services on the Blakemere site we tend to only check out the vintage emporiums.

There are a few posts on the blog from previous visits, including this one from 2020.

I like to look for …

I like to look for and buy old motorcycle books and magazines, and over the years I have collected a few items that I have really enjoyed buying – probably enough to bore the pants of many people but like finding lost treasure to me.

Not only that but I can easily be swayed by the sight, touch and I have to admit the smell of old oil cans.

There’s something about them that just draws me to them and as good fortune would have it I was able to pick up a decent old oil can whilst we were out and about during the week. The oil can was Farrow House antiques at Blakemere.

A second place we called to recently was  Holden Wood Antiques and it’s a place we call to from time to time. Holden Wood is over in Rossendale in the North West and about a 40 minute or so drive from our home.

The first picture set (Set One) was taken at Blakemere Village, after that there are pictures of that magnificent oil can and then another picture set (Set Two) from Holden Wood.

Another oil can for the collection

The pictures below are of the oil can I mentioned earlier and that I picked up at whilst at Blakemere.

This particular oil can was manufactured by a company called Wesco. A.E. Westwood Ltd, a company that was established in the late 1920’s.

By the mid to late 1930’s Westco was manufacturing around 20 or so different models of oil can. The company is still around, but is now part of the SJ Group in Alcester, and located some 20 miles south of the original factory. Wesco oil containers are now typically made of high density polythene with nylon pumps.

Beauty of course is in the eye of the beholder and I find these old oil cans pretty easy on the eye, and really do like seeing them each time I use my garage.

Picture set two

The pictures in this set are from our visit to Holden Wood Antiques. We really like this place, well laid out, easy to browse and plenty if fascinating items to look at. Theres also a very decent tea room attached – with first class service in a pleasent environment.
