April visit to Shakerley Mere

Shakerley Mere

We recently took the fairly short car journey into Cheshire and made an April visit to Shakerley Mere. The mere itself is close to the village of Goostrey (in east Cheshire). We did some walking last year in that area and you can check this link out to visit the blog post from our walk in that area.

Shakerley Mere is quite a decent place for a wander although following the footpath around the mere is quite a short walk and is only about a mile or so. But it’s a pretty flat and even footpath, which suited me during our visit as I get back to full mobility after some routine knee surgery.

Pretty quiet …

It was pretty quiet on the lake when we were there and in truth there wasn’t a great deal to see, but I understand that on other occasions there is potential to see a range of wildlife for whom Shakerley Mere is home to, and these include: cormorants, black headed gulls, great crested grebes, heron, oystercatchers and kingfishers. We have visited and walked around the lake once before and there was certainly more wildlife about on our previous visit – I suspect the time of year and many of the birds nesting were the reason it was so quiet during our April visit.

Car parking facilities are quite good and are free, and there are plenty of well maintained benches around the lake as well as numerous picnic tables, most of which are well positioned. The only downside (in my opinion) is that the lake is located very close to the M6 motorway, which in turn means that traffic noise is constant and very noticeable – although I wouldn’t let that put you off.
